Chemotherapy and Medical Mineral Water

The term “cancer” is used as a general name to refer to a group of more than 100 diseases in which the cells of our body begin to grow and reproduce without control. Unfortunately, cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases of the 21st century.

Half of all men and a third of women will have a diagnosis of cancer in their lifetime.

For most cancer patients, living with this disease is the biggest challenge they have ever faced as it changes their routines and relationships.

Thanks to the advance of science and technology we have remedies to combat this disease. Currently, the treatments used to treat and cure cancer are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Its mission is to destroy cancer cells to prevent them from reproducing. Because of their high potential for action, the drugs used in chemotherapy also damage healthy cells in our body, so this treatment has side effects. Some of the most frequent are nausea, fatigue and generalized pain. The skin is one of the organs that suffer most from this treatment, the most common effects being dry skin, eczema, photosensitivity and subsequent hyperpigmentation.

BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF BALNEOTHERAPY

A new line of treatment for the tumor processes bets to include adjuvant treatments to the conventional ones, and this is where the Balneotherapy comes into play. Increasingly, studies confirming that stays in spas for cancer patients improve the quality of life and prognosis of disease, alleviating the sequelae and favoring recovery. Mineral-medicinal waters contribute to the relief of fatigue and nausea, reduce pain, reduce stress, anxiety and depression, and favor healing of wounds. Another of the most important effects for this type of patients is the antioxidant action exerted by these waters on the immune system, which is depressed in these processes.

An example of the many that show the benefits of balneotherapy for this disease is a study conducted in the United States for women with non-metastatic breast cancer on chemotherapy. The level of depression and anxiety of the patients was assessed through validated questionnaires. The results were very revealing, as there was a marked improvement of these parameters at 6, 12 and 24 months.

BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF OUR SPA

If all this was not enough, one of the treatments in our Spa produces a great improvement when it is being treated with chemotherapy. These are our soaking tubs. When immersed in hot water, the pores of the skin dilate and thanks to the mineral rich composition of our waters produces a biological effect known as osmosis. The refined salts and toxins leave our body to the outside through the pores, purifying and cleaning blood and tissues. As the salt leaves outside the nucleus of the cells, these are alkalinized, inducing the death of the tumor cells; Which need an acid medium to reproduce. All the acidic fractions that we eliminate in the baths (CO2, fats, ammonia and uric acid) no longer need to be eliminated by lungs, kidneys and liver. In this way, we prevent possible damages to these organs by an excessive elimination of cytotoxic products used in chemotherapy.

From  Zújar Spa we invite you to visit us, try our waters and be participants of its benefits and properties.

PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF WATER AS A THERMOTERAPIC METHOD

PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF WATER AS A THERMOTERAPIC METHOD

Below we describe the physiological effects produced by water, having as a quality an elevated temperature, as is the case of the waters of the Balneario de Zújar. To achieve the thermo-therapeutic effects of water we need a temperature ranging from 36.5 to 40.5ºC.

-Analgesia: Heat raises the sensitivity threshold of nociceptors (pain receptors), decreases nerve conduction velocity and reduces muscle contraction. It acts as contrairritante, to modify the painful sensation.

The analgesic effect is also given by the release of endorphins that occurs after the hyperthermal bath. If the hot water bath is added to the agitation of the water in bubble mode the analgesic effect is greater.   – Tissue Vasodilatation: If the application is sufficiently wide, the body temperature rises between 0.5 and 3ºC resulting in an increase of all organic functions due to overheating.

A temperature rise decreases the tone of the vascular musculature with the consequence of an increase in blood flow. Hyperemia, which is the increase of blood in an organ or tissue, as a result of the aforementioned tissue vasodilation, produces: analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, increases cellular metabolism, increases reabsorption and elimination of metabolites, accelerates tissue repair processes .

-Seat: When the temperature of the water is close to our body temperature but slightly elevated and applied over a long period of time there is a body relaxation and a generalized sense of well-being. While applying very hot water in a short space of time produces the opposite effect, stirring.

– Antispasmodic and muscle relaxant effect: Long applications between 36 and 38 ° C exert a relaxing effect on muscle tone, combat contracture and muscle fatigue. This antispasmodic effect also acts reflexively on the smooth musculature of organs and internal viscera, so it is beneficial in cases such as abdominal cramps.

-Effect on the connective tissue: The heat causes an increase in the elasticity of the connective tissue. Very useful to decrease the articular and periarticular stiffness produced in rheumatic processes. Other benefits of water temperature can be found when performing physical exercise in water: -Relaxation. – Decreased pain and muscle spasm. -Increased circulation. – Maintenance or increase of joint mobility. – Muscular reeducation.

-Decreased joint and muscle load.

ALL THESE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS FOR OUR HEALTH, BETWEEN OTHERS, WE CAN FIND THEM IN ZUJAR’S SPA WATERS SINCE THE TEMPERATURE OF THEIR DIFFERENT INSTALLATIONS ROCK FROM 34ºC TO 41ºC.
